Most marketing teams ship a great pillar piece (a 1500-word blog post, a podcast episode, a research report) and then ship... that. One asset. One channel. The same team will, two weeks later, complain that they need more content.
The pillar piece is not the deliverable. The pillar piece is the raw material. A documented repurposing workflow turns one pillar into thirty assets across every channel that matters, with no quality loss.
Here is the workflow we use.
The repurposing pyramid
One pillar piece produces:
- 5 short-form blog variations. Each one a 400-700 word post that drills into a single section of the pillar. Internal-linked back to the pillar, optimised for a long-tail query the pillar itself does not target.
- 10 social atoms. Tweet-length insights, LinkedIn micro-essays, Instagram carousel slides, TikTok captions. Each atom is one specific point from the pillar, lifted out and reshaped.
- 5 video cuts. Talking-head explainers, screen-recorded walkthroughs, founder reactions. Short-form (15-60 seconds) for TikTok and Reels, medium-form (2-5 minutes) for YouTube and LinkedIn.
- 4 email touchpoints. Newsletter feature, follow-up email for new subscribers, drip-campaign segment for warm leads, "best of last quarter" round-up at the end of the period.
- 6 ad creatives. Static images for Meta, video hooks for TikTok and Reels, carousel-format for retargeting, search-ad headlines for branded plus a few long-tail keywords.
Total: 30 assets per pillar.
The 8-step workflow
A documented workflow makes this predictable. Ours runs:
- Pillar draft. Single author. 1500-2000 words. Specific, opinionated, contains at least one number nobody else has published.
- Editor pass. Tighten language, fix any factual claims, surface the three best one-liners for atomisation.
- Section breakout. Identify the 5 sections that can each become a standalone short-form post. Write 50-word briefs for each.
- Atom extraction. Pull 10 specific insights or numbers from the pillar. Reshape each for one specific surface: tweet, LinkedIn post, IG carousel slide, etc.
- Video shotlist. From the same atoms, identify which translate to video. Write a 1-minute script per video.
- Email scheduling. Pick the section that maps best to newsletter, the one that maps to nurture, etc. Briefs ready for the email writer.
- Ad brief. From the pillar's strongest hooks, brief 6 ad creatives. Run them as creative tests, not as one-off campaigns.
- Cross-link audit. Every short-form post links back to the pillar. The pillar gets updated with internal links to the short-form posts when they publish. Email touchpoints link to the pillar. Ad creatives drive to either the pillar or the most-relevant short-form.
The first time a team runs this workflow, it takes 15-20 hours. By the fourth pillar, the same team is hitting 8-10 hours per pillar piece. The workflow becomes muscle memory.
What stops most teams
Three failure modes:
- Pillar quality is too low. If the pillar piece has nothing distinctive in it, the repurposed atoms are even thinner. The pyramid only works if the source material is dense with insight.
- No documented brief format per surface. Without a "social atom brief" template and a "video shotlist" template, the work feels improvisational and gets skipped.
- No single owner. The pillar piece writer is rarely the social media manager or the email writer. Without a single owner who hands briefs from each format to each person, the repurposing fragments and stops.
Fix the three, and a pillar piece reliably becomes thirty assets.
The SEO side
The five short-form blog variations are the SEO play. Each one targets a long-tail query that the pillar piece itself cannot rank for (it is too broad).
Example, working backward from the pillar you are reading:
- Pillar: "Content repurposing: one pillar piece, thirty assets" (broad query: "content repurposing strategy")
- Variation 1: "How to write a LinkedIn post from a blog: a 6-step workflow"
- Variation 2: "What is the right ratio of original to repurposed content on social media?"
- Variation 3: "Email newsletter ideas from your existing blog backlog"
- Variation 4: "How to shoot 5 short-form videos from one talking-head session"
- Variation 5: "Creative briefs for Meta ads: 3 templates that consistently win"
Each variation is its own ranking opportunity. The pillar is the hub; the variations are the cluster. Internal linking compounds the topical authority.
Tooling
You do not need an expensive content stack to ship this. The minimum is:
- A shared editorial calendar (Notion, Airtable, or a Google Sheet).
- A brief template for each format, stored where every writer can find them.
- A clear naming convention so the pillar's variations, atoms, and creatives are all traceable to their source.
We use Notion for the calendar, Figma for the social-atom visuals, and CapCut for the short-form video edits. Nothing exotic.
What this looks like with us
Content creation engagements at MindScrollers ship the pillar plus the full repurposed set, on a monthly cadence. The first month is calendar build and template work; from month two onward the team ships 30+ assets per pillar piece.
If you want this run for you rather than by you, the $2,490 SEO content pack is the same process on a calendar: topic map, briefs, drafts and the internal linking, priced up front with no call.
